Sesame oil ranking 2026

Sesame oil is often bought on impulse — a nice bottle, an affordable price, a nutty aroma. Less often do people check whether it is cold-pressed, whether the manufacturer has stated the country of origin of the raw material, and whether the label hides unnecessary additives.

In this ranking, we evaluated 7 products available in Polish online stores using a uniform methodology: ingredients, certifications, label transparency, and value for money.

What is sesame oil and what makes it stand out?

Sesame oil is a vegetable oil pressed from Indian sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum). It is one of the oldest edible oils in the world — documents confirm its use in Mesopotamia as far back as 5,000 years ago. Today, it remains a staple ingredient in Asian cuisine: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian.

There are two main types of sesame oil on the market, which differ in taste, color, and use:

  • Oil from unroasted seeds has a light straw color and a delicate, subtle taste. Cold-pressed, it retains a full profile of bioactive compounds — lignans, phytosterols, and vitamin E. Used cold, in salads, dressings, pastes, and as an addition to ready-made dishes.
  • Oil from roasted seeds has a dark brown color and an intense, nutty aroma, which is a characteristic flavor of Asian cuisine. Roasting the seeds before pressing makes the oil more aromatic, but some of the bioactive compounds are transformed. Used as a seasoning — a few drops added to a finished dish just before serving.

Most products in this ranking come from roasted seeds — this is the dominant variant on the Polish market.

Health properties of sesame oil

Fat profile

Sesame oil contains approximately 92–100 g of total fat per 100 ml, of which:

  • ~38–42 g are monounsaturated fatty acids (mainly oleic acid, omega-9)
  • ~37–45 g are polyunsaturated fatty acids (mainly linoleic acid, omega-6)
  • ~12–18 g are saturated fatty acids

The ratio of omega-6 to omega-9 is similar — sesame oil is not a major source of omega-3, but it has a beneficial, balanced fat structure.

Lignans — sesamin and sesamolin

A unique feature of sesame oil is the presence of lignans: sesamin and sesamolin. These are natural antioxidants that are responsible for the exceptional stability of sesame oil — it is significantly more resistant to rancidity than most other vegetable oils, despite its high content of unsaturated fatty acids. Sesamol (a hydrolysis product of sesamolin) exhibits strong antioxidant activity, and studies indicate cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory properties.

Vitamin E

Sesame oil is a good source of vitamin E (tocopherols) — depending on the product, it contains 7–29 mg per 100 ml, covering 60% to over 200% of an adult's daily requirement. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, protecting fatty acids from oxidation both in the bottle and in the body.

Phytosterols

Sesame oil is among the oils with the highest phytosterol content of all vegetable oils — 360–473 mg per 100 g. Phytosterols exhibit a cholesterol-lowering effect by competing with cholesterol for absorption in the intestines.

Uses of sesame oil

In the kitchen

Unrefined cold-pressed sesame oil is not suitable for frying — due to its low smoke point (~177°C for unrefined) and the sensitivity of unsaturated fatty acids to high temperatures. It loses its valuable properties and can become bitter.

Optimal culinary uses:

  • Dressings and sauces — a few tablespoons in a vinaigrette with rice vinegar, soy sauce, and ginger
  • Finishing dishes — a few drops on finished miso soup, ramen, stir-fry, or rice — just before serving
  • Marinades — for tofu, chicken, and shrimp before grilling
  • Hummus and pastes — instead of or alongside tahini
  • Salads — especially with soba noodles, root vegetables, and Chinese cabbage
  • Oatmeal and smoothies — a teaspoon added cold

In personal care

Sesame oil has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries as a massage oil (abhyanga). It has moisturizing properties, is easily absorbed through the skin, and does not clog pores. Used externally:

  • as a body and face massage oil
  • for hair oiling — strengthens the structure and slows down graying
  • as an ingredient in homemade hair masks
  • for oil pulling — rinsing the mouth to reduce bacteria

How to choose a good sesame oil — what to look for?

  • Cold-pressed — this is a key parameter. The pressing temperature should not exceed 40–45°C to preserve lignans and vitamin E in their unaltered form. Look for this designation on the label.
  • Unrefined — refined oil is devoid of flavor, aroma, and most bioactive compounds. On cold-pressed sesame oil, you may see natural sediment — this is a good sign, not a defect.
  • Single ingredient — the ingredients should read exclusively "sesame oil" or "oil from sesame seeds". The presence of preservatives, oil blends, or colorings reduces the product's value.
  • Dark bottle — unsaturated fatty acids are sensitive to UV light. Oil in a transparent container loses its properties faster.
  • Organic certification — organic oils come from crops grown without synthetic pesticides and herbicides. This is more important for cold-pressed oil than refined oil, as impurities from the raw material are not removed during production.
  • Country of origin of the raw material — sesame is a tropical plant and comes mainly from Africa, India, China, and Central Asia. A manufacturer that states the country of origin of the raw material operates transparently. The absence of this information on the label is a warning sign.

Ranking methodology

We evaluated each oil in five categories, which together give a maximum of 100 points:

  • Ingredients and purity (35 pts) — the most important category. Is the oil cold-pressed (15 pts), unrefined (10 pts), and does it contain only one ingredient (10 pts)?
  • Fatty acid profile (25 pts) — here is an important methodological note. The criterion for Type B requires over 50% monounsaturated fatty acids. No sesame oil naturally reaches this threshold — monounsaturated fatty acids account for ~38–42 g per 100 ml. This is a biological characteristic of the plant. In this category, all products received 0 points — this is a fair leveling of the playing field, not a methodological error.
  • Origin and certifications (20 pts) — organic certification (10 pts), stating the country of origin of the raw material (5 pts), raw material from a certified area (5 pts).
  • Value for money (10 pts) — prices calculated per 100 ml. Below the market average for the given class: 10 pts. Above average with justification by certification or quality: 5 pts. Above average without justification: 0 pts.
  • Packaging (10 pts) — dark bottle (5 pts), complete label with country of origin and nutritional values (3 pts), airtight cap (2 pts).

Sesame oil ranking

🥇 1st place — Bio Planète Organic Virgin Cold-Pressed Sesame Oil 500 ml

70 / 100 pts
Bio Planète Organic Virgin Cold-Pressed Sesame Oil 500 ml
Price: ~45 PLN / 500 ml → 9.00 PLN per 100 ml Certification: EU BIO Country of origin of the raw material: Burkina Faso

Bio Planète is one of the few sesame oils on the Polish market that combines full label transparency with organic certification. Ingredients: exclusively sesame oil from certified crops, cold-pressed, without any additives. Country of origin stated directly: Burkina Faso. EU BIO certification. Dark glass bottle, complete label.

Nutritional values per 100 ml: saturated 16 g, monounsaturated 40 g, polyunsaturated 37 g, vitamin E 11 mg (62% of the daily requirement).

At 9.00 PLN per 100 ml, with full certification and a complete label, Bio Planète offers the best balance of quality and price in the comparison.

For whom: for people who want organic oil at a reasonable price and expect full information on the label.

🥈 2nd place — Rapunzel Organic Sesame Oil 250 ml

65 / 100 pts
Rapunzel Organic Sesame Oil 250 ml
Price: ~22–27 PLN / 250 ml → ~9.80 PLN per 100 ml Certification: DE-OKO-006 Country of origin of the raw material: Mali

Rapunzel is a German manufacturer with DE-OKO-006 certification, distributed in Poland by Bio Planet S.A. Ingredients: 100% organic oil from sesame seeds — without any additives. Country of origin: Mali. Cold-pressed. Dark glass bottle, complete label.

Nutritional values per 100 ml: saturated 15 g, monounsaturated 39 g, polyunsaturated 39 g.

Compared to Bio Planète, the difference is a slightly higher price per 100 ml and a smaller package size (250 ml) — convenient for less frequent use, as sesame oil should be consumed within 3 months after opening.

For whom: for people looking for certified organic oil in a smaller package.

🥉 3rd place — Big Nature Organic Sesame Oil 250 ml

64 / 100 pts
Big Nature Organic Sesame Oil 250 ml
Price: ~17 PLN / 250 ml → ~6.80 PLN per 100 ml Certification: PL-EKO-04 Country of origin of the raw material: outside the EU

Big Nature (manufacturer: Mix Brands Sp. z o.o.) is the cheapest certified organic oil in the comparison. PL-EKO-04 certification. Ingredients: 100% organic sesame oil, mechanically cold-pressed without heat. Dark glass bottle.

The only drawback: the label states only "outside the EU" as the country of origin of the raw material without specifying. This limits transparency: Big Nature loses 5 pts in the origin and certifications category and 1 pt in the packaging category, but thanks to the lower price, it gains 5 pts in the value for money category — thus falling behind Rapunzel by 1 point.

Nutritional values per 100 g: saturated 18 g, monounsaturated 40 g, polyunsaturated 42 g.

At 6.80 PLN per 100 ml, it is the best price option among certified organic oils in this comparison.

For whom: for people prioritizing organic certification on a limited budget.

4th place — Oleofarm Unrefined Sesame Oil 250 ml

55 / 100 pts
Oleofarm Unrefined Sesame Oil 250 ml
Price: ~26 PLN / 250 ml → ~10.40 PLN per 100 ml Certification: No organic certification Country of origin of the raw material: Mexico

Oleofarm oil is available in pharmacies, herbalist shops, and drugstores throughout Poland — one of the most widely available products in retail. Ingredients confirmed on the manufacturer's website: exclusively unrefined oil from roasted sesame seeds, cold-pressed. Dark glass bottle, complete label. Country of origin: Mexico (information from distributor product sheets — we recommend verifying on the physical label).

Nutritional values per 100 ml: saturated 15 g, monounsaturated 38 g, polyunsaturated 39 g, omega-6 38 g, omega-9 37 g.

The lack of organic certification and a price slightly above the market average lower the score compared to certified organic oils from the top three. However, the product has a clear advantage in availability.

For whom: for people buying in pharmacies and brick-and-mortar stores, valuing availability and a trusted brand.

5th place — Olejarnia Niwki Cold-Pressed Sesame Oil 250 ml

48 / 100 pts
Olejarnia Niwki Cold-Pressed Sesame Oil 250 ml
Price: ~34 PLN / 250 ml → ~13.60 PLN per 100 ml Certification: No organic certification Country of origin of the raw material: no data

Olejarnia Niwki is an artisanal oil mill in Mazovia that presses oils in small batches directly to order — which means a guarantee of freshness. Sesame oil: 100% cold-pressed, unrefined, without any additives, dark glass bottle.

Main drawbacks: no organic certification, no information about the country of origin of the raw material, the price of ~13.60 PLN per 100 ml is the highest among products without organic certification. The higher price is due to the artisanal production model — small batches, direct shipping, guarantee of freshness — which has value, but is difficult to objectively quantify in the scoring system.

For whom: for people valuing freshness, domestic artisanal production, and direct contact with the manufacturer, accepting a higher price.

6th place — Olini Sesame Oil 100 ml

43 / 100 pts
Olini Sesame Oil 100 ml
Price: PLN 64.90 / 100 ml Certificate: No organic certificate Country of origin: no data

Olini is a product distinguished by a unique approach: the composition is 100% cold-pressed oil from roasted white sesame seeds, developed in cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Łódź to maximize sesamolin content. Studies confirmed a sesamolin content of 17.3–19.7 mg/kg — sesamolin is a stronger antioxidant than vitamin C (data from the Science Hub project documentation). Dark glass bottle.

However, PLN 64.90 for 100 ml is a result that significantly deviates from the market. For comparison, the certified BIO Bio Planète oil costs PLN 9.00 for 100 ml. Due to the lack of an organic certificate and information about the country of origin, the product does not perform well in a ranking based on the price-to-quality ratio.

For whom: for people deliberately looking for an oil with the highest confirmed sesamolin content and treating it as part of a health-promoting diet, for whom price is secondary.

7th place — Asia Kitchen Sesame Oil 500 ml

33 / 100 pts
Asia Kitchen Sesame Oil 500 ml
Price: ~PLN 21 / 500 ml → ~PLN 4.20 per 100 ml Certificate: No organic certificate Country of origin: China

Asia Kitchen is the most popular sesame oil on Allegro. Composition: 100% sesame oil from roasted seeds. Country of production: China. Dark glass bottle.

Why so low? In available Polish sources, neither cold pressing nor unrefined status can be confirmed for this product. Product sheets do not contain this information — and our methodology requires confirmation, not guesswork. No certificate, sparse data on the online label.

Important note: a low position in the ranking does not mean that the product is bad. It means that based on publicly available data, its quality cannot be assessed in the categories key to this comparison. People using this oil as a flavoring for Asian cuisine — a few drops in finished ramen or stir-fry — may be fully satisfied with it and do not need cold-pressed oil.

For whom: for people using sesame oil mainly as an aromatic seasoning for Asian cuisine, for whom price is a priority.

Comparison table — sesame oil ranking

Product Price/100ml Composition (35) Acids (25) Certificate/country (20) Price/quality (10) Packaging (10) Total
Bio Planète BIO 500 ml PLN 9.00 35 0 15 10 10 70
Rapunzel BIO 250 ml PLN 9.80 35 0 15 5 10 65
Big Nature BIO 250 ml PLN 6.80 35 0 10 10 9 64
Oleofarm 250 ml PLN 10.40 35 0 5 5 10 55
Olejarnia Niwki 250 ml PLN 13.60 35 0 0 5 8 48
Olini 100 ml PLN 64.90 35 0 0 0 8 43
Asia Kitchen 500 ml PLN 4.20 10 0 5 10 8 33

* Category "Fatty acids" — 0 pts for all: sesame oil by definition contains ~38–42 g of monounsaturated fats per 100 ml, not exceeding the required threshold of 50%. This is a biological characteristic of the plant, not a product defect.

Storing sesame oil

Store unrefined cold-pressed sesame oil in the refrigerator — both before and after opening. A temperature of 4–10°C slows down the oxidation of fatty acids. After opening, use within 3–6 months (the deadline depends on the product — check the label). Natural sediment at the bottom of the bottle is normal — shake before use.

Do not heat the oil above 40–70°C. Even oil from roasted seeds loses its properties during prolonged frying — add it to dishes just before serving.

Summary

Three certified organic oils take the top three places in the ranking — and it is not by chance. An organic certificate requires the manufacturer to provide full information about the supply chain, including the country of origin and production method. It is this transparency that distinguishes the leaders from products further down the list.

The Polish market is dominated by sesame oils made from raw materials from outside the EU — sesame is a tropical plant and this cannot be avoided. Key questions when choosing are: does the manufacturer communicate this openly? Do they state the country of origin? Is the oil cold-pressed and unrefined?

General recommendation:
  • If you are looking for an everyday oil with a good price-to-quality ratio — Bio Planète or Big Nature are solid, certified choices under PLN 10 per 100 ml.
  • If you prefer to buy at a pharmacy or physical store — Oleofarm is a proven and widely available choice.
  • If you use the oil mainly as a flavoring for Asian cuisine and price matters — Asia Kitchen will meet your taste expectations, although it will not provide full data on the production process.
